We often indulge in conversations in offices, with family and friends, and couldn’t find the right word and end up stammering due to lack of words. This is not because you don’t know the substance, it’s because you have not worked on your vocabulary, you haven’t put up any extra effort into it. The human brain, when develops, constantly look up new ways to co-operate, this happens at the age we learn new things, childhood but as we grow adults, the process of learning new words significantly come to a halt, in most scenarios unless we consciously interrupt our brain and feed it new words, ideas, and intellect.

Words are the tool to express ourselves, we can’t draw any image or make other people visualize to express ourselves, we’ve to rely on the words. Many people don’t understand the power of words, they believe that knowing the substance is enough but what they don’t know is that the substance itself is raw unless we don’t fill it with the words, ideas, and intellect. Vocabulary is nothing but, a collection of words, and after learning new vocab every day our ideas and intellect expand as with each new word, we learn something new. You have to adapt to the mentality of a child who learns new words every day, we need to be an enthusiast and consciously choose to learn. Consider new vocab as your food and you’ve to eat them every day. Here I’ll be showing you some basic steps, after following which you can overpower your vocabulary. So let’s begin -

The WPME Formula:

WPME stands for Word Power Made Easy, it’s an impeccable book for mastering your vocabulary by Norman Lewis. First, published in 1979, it has been the best book in this category for decades. This book has a miraculous power to develop your vocabulary. What it simply does is that it creates that a child’s tendency to learn but in a more creative and organized way.

  • Don’t mistake to be simply a book and don’t read it. This is not for reading. Think like you are challenged to learn vocab and then proceed to read it. It has assessment exercises and practice pages, to make holistic learning.
  • It is not only the key to vocab, but it provides a great on improving pronunciation as well as grammar. We make mistakes where we need to intricately pronounce a word and that could cost you a lot at the formal level.
  • The book is divided into chapters with each chapter itself divided into 3 sessions and it would take about half to one hour to complete one session at a time.
  • It has a unique way of introducing things. Each chapter begins with a session with ten core words and in the subsequent sessions, you will get a thorough study on words related to these words but in an etymological way.
  • Etymology refers to the study of the origin and meanings of words. The book describes the etymology of words, their roots, prefixes, and suffixes. It has in great detail, listed various noun, adjective, verb, adverb forms of various words.
  • By learning root words and their prefixes and suffixes, your whole level of intellect changes as you will be then able to identify the words which you haven’t even been introduced to yet but will guess by breaking the word based on etymology.
  • To assimilate the contents of the book you need to practice by literally writing down what you have learned and practicing the exercises and checkpoints.
  • You can’t aimlessly go into this book. Dedicate a fixed time in a day to this book and do one or two sessions at a time along with their exercises and stick to the routine. You will see phenomenal results.
  • Finally, this is more than a book if you consider it. While reading it you will realize that whole environmental around will change. You will come across many roots which have been mentioned in the book while reading or listening and your mind will began to think in an etymological way and I’m this way you vocabulary collection will be altered.

Along with reading a book, you should look for alternative ways to enhance the vocabulary based on the same formula. The book doesn’t contain complete vocab, prefer it to use as a formula book rather than a dictionary kind of book, you have to make other efforts as well to make a solid vocabulary.

Begin with a word -

Whenever you come across an enigmatic word, search the whole history of the word, it’s the root, suffix synonyms, antonyms, and similar words. You’ll gather information about a whole bunch of words.

Newspaper -

Newspaper, updates every day, they have the same structure of writing and the similar vocabulary repeats with new words introduce to you at regular intervals. Due to two opposite factors, repetitiveness and freshness of newspaper it is a very very ideal way to bolter vocab.

Fiction Novels -

Fiction novels are fun to read, as opposed to self-help books they are quite intriguing and easy to go. By reading this you’ll realize that you will end up mugging dozens of words as you progress.

Vocab as a Habit -

Treat learning new vocab as a habit. Never miss any day to learn vocab. If you imbibe it into your routine, you will new vocab as a part of your lifestyle.

Through Entertainment -

Everybody does Netflix and chill and watch movies of your favorite characters but I want to add one new task into it. We often ignore the new terms while watching any stuff. You should carefully note down such words and infer the meaning from the scene in the movie.

Learning new vocabulary is fun if you are willing to do it. But the core thing is the WPME formula of learning it. Breaking the word according to the etymology and reaching the extremes of that root and you will be ahead in the race. I hope, this would be a great insight for you.

Thank you for Reading :)
